October 12th calls for healing and reparations

On October 12, 2024, the Indigenous Liberation Movement (ILM) organized an impactful Indigenous Liberation Walk in Amsterdam, coinciding with the historical date of October 12, 1492. As part of ILM and also representing MABIKAs Foundation during the event was Myra Colis, who served as the moderator during the evening’s program following the walk.

In the Philippines, the whole month of October is designated as National Indigenous Peoples Month, and it is the time of the year when we can all commemorate the recognition and protection of the rights of indigenous communities within the framework of national unity and development. The October 12th ILM event is, thus, a part of the broader Indigenous Liberation Day celebration, bringing together diverse Indigenous communities, advocates, and supporters to commemorate centuries of resistance and resilience.

Participants walked in solidarity, demanding recognition and justice for Indigenous peoples’ rights worldwide, while also celebrating their cultures, contributions, and ongoing struggles against colonialism. The walk culminated in a vibrant cultural showcase with performances, including the symbolic return of the Zilvervloot to Bolivia, in collaboration with the Bolivian embassy. The event ended with a ceremonial “Mycelium Joy,” uniting attendees through dance, drums, and a shared spirit of renewal and joy.

The walk emphasized the importance of Indigenous voices in addressing contemporary global issues and the enduring call for justice, cultural preservation, and decolonization.

This event is organized by Indigenous Liberation Movement (ILM) in collaboration with the youngsters from Milieudefensie Jong.
